What is survivor Leadership?

A survivor leader is someone who has lived experience and takes on a role of leadership. Survivors bring expertise through their experiences, and can help shape our community to be more trauma- informed and survivor centered.

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.”

-Brené Brown

What is Survivor Leadership Group?

An opportunity for survivor voices to be elevated and understood by peers through a confidential, structured, supportive, peer led group.

  • Peer Support

  • Common lived experience

  • Inclusive and relaxed

Survivor Leadership Group is a support group meant to create community and connection with other survivors of “the life”. Each SLG has a unique topic meant to provide mindful support and growth to members of the community!

“It’s coming to a place where you can just sit if you want to... let your guard down a little bit.”

EXPERIENCE

Circular badge with a blue, purple, and teal border. Inside, the text reads "Survivor Heart Advisory Council" with colorful heart and arrow icons, and the words "Safety Compass" in smaller font at the top left.

The Safety Compass Survivor Advisory Council (SCSAC) is a group of lived experience experts who inform programs, policies, and tools that impact survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in our community. These individuals bring unique insight rooted in personal lived-experience, helping ensure services are effective, equitable, and survivor-centered.

What We Do

  • Offer trauma-informed guidance on policies, screening tools, and programs

  • Partner with agencies and organizations to ensure survivor voices shape decision-making

  • Promote accountability and survivor leadership in service design

Survivor Review of Screening Tools & Agency Procedures

We welcome the opportunity to provide survivor-informed review of any screening tool or procedure being considered to identify individuals at risk of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking.

Our review includes:

  • Feedback on trauma-informed language and framing

  • Assessment of effectiveness and relevance

  • Suggestions based on current trends in survivor experiences

This includes a formal written summary of feedback. Upon completion, we can also provide a public statement for your website confirming that the tool was reviewed by the SCSAC.

Why It Matters

Survivors are the experts in what works. Insight from survivor leaders and lived-experience experts leads to stronger, more compassionate systems. Including lived experience isn’t optional—it’s essential.
